AWI New Director Maarten BoersmaFrom 1 May 2025, Professor Dr. Maarten Boersma will take over as Acting Director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). He steps into the role following the departure of Professor Dr. Antje Boetius, who has been appointed President of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California.

A biologist with a research focus on coastal ecosystems, Boersma has been affiliated with the AWI since 2001, primarily at the Helgoland and Sylt stations. Since 2015, he has led the Coastal Ecology section and became a member of the AWI Board of Directors in summer 2024. His scientific work examines the impacts of climate change and other stressors on plankton communities, particularly in the North Sea and Arctic coastal systems.

Boersma assumes leadership at a time when AWI is preparing for the next round of programme-oriented funding under the Helmholtz Association. The institute recently received a strong assessment in its latest international evaluation.

He will serve as Acting Director until a long-term appointment is made by the selection committee.
